Storm drain pvc pipe

June 11, 2025

Storm drain pvc pipe is the core component of modern drainage system, mainly used to collect and divert surface rainwater to prevent urban waterlogging. Its core advantages include:

Lightweight: The density is only 1/5 of cast iron pipe, which greatly reduces transportation and installation costs.

Corrosion resistance: It has natural resistance to acid, alkali, salt spray and microbial erosion, and its service life can reach more than 50 years.

Low flow resistance: The inner wall is smooth (Manning coefficient n0.009), and the drainage efficiency is 20%-30% higher than that of concrete pipe.

Technical parameters and industry standards

1. International standards

ASTM D3034: Standardizes the dimensional tolerance and bursting pressure of PVC rainwater pipes, requiring DN200 pipes to withstand 1.2MPa hydrostatic pressure.

EN 1401: The EU standard stipulates that the ring stiffness must be 8kN/m² (SN8 grade) to cope with buried loads.

2. Chinese Standards

GB/T 20221-2006: specifies the physical properties of PVC-U pipes for non-pressure buried drainage, such as longitudinal shrinkage rate 5%.

CECS 122:2001: Technical regulations require that the slope of rainwater pipes be 0.5% and the flow rate be controlled at 0.6-3m/s to prevent siltation.

Hydraulic design and engineering application

1. Flow calculation model

Use Manning formula to calculate drainage capacity:

Q = (1/n) × A × R^(2/3) × S^(1/2)

Where:

Q is the flow rate (m³/s)

A is the cross-sectional area of the water flow

R is the hydraulic radius

S is the pipe slope

Example: DN300 PVC pipe with a slope of 0.8%, the full pipe flow can reach 0.12m³/s, meeting the rainfall demand of a 10-year return period.

Installation and construction points

1. Trench specifications

When the burial depth is 3m, the trench bottom width = pipe diameter + 300mm;

The foundation needs to be laid with a 100mm thick sand cushion layer, and the compaction degree is 90%.

2. Connection technology

Socket-type adhesive: suitable for pipes DN200mm, curing time 30 minutes;

Rubber ring seal: recommended for large pipe diameters, allowing ±3° deflection angle.

Industry frontier dynamics

Intelligent pipeline system: integrated flow sensor (such as ultrasonic Doppler probe), real-time data upload to the municipal management platform;

Nano-modified PVC: adding graphene to improve impact strength (up to 60kJ/m²), suitable for earthquake zones.

Storm drain pvc pipe has become the first choice for modern drainage projects due to its comprehensive performance advantages. In the future, with the in-depth application of BIM technology (such as pipeline collision detection) and stricter environmental regulations (such as RoHS heavy metal restrictions), the industry will develop in the direction of high performance and digitalization.
